What is a Mother Model Agent and how will it benefit you to be signed by them?
As a new model in the industry you will probably hear the term "mother agent" or "mother agency". You may well think, what is a mother agency? Is a mother agency something you need to obtain when you’re first starting out as a model? And, if so, how do you get one? All good questions....
A mother agent or agency is usually the first modelling agency you begin working with, when you start your modelling career. A mother agent can also be a scout that discovered you and helped you get your started and into this industry as a model.
You may not know how to find your way initially as a model and so when you are first starting out a mother agent will be the one that helps you learn the industry step by step and the one that helps you build your modelling portfolio, and also gives you advice and guidance on the best direction for your career and how to avoid pitfalls as well as gain success.
They may also promote you to clients and advertising agencies or help you to gain contacts and work with them either in your local area or online so that you can book jobs and build your contacts and confidence as you take on campaigns whether large or small.
They may nurture your ability to go out there and produce great modelling by offering training in specific areas and may well help you set up media content, social media presence and fan base.
If you live outside of New York, Milan, Paris, Tokyo, London the hub of top modelling, your mother agency will likely promote you to larger markets such as these and the relevant companies and marketing campaigns, so that they can help book jobs with major publications like Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, or with clients such as Prada, Gucci, Armani, Calvin Klein, Ted Baker or the like via the mother agent whom you sign with to further your career as a known model and face.
A good mother agent will understand the industry as a whole, how it works who controls the industry, where to find work and how to gain reputable work. Rather than focusing on just their own market they need to have excellent connections to outside agencies and a good understanding of how the various markets do business and how to gain the work and status as a model you desire.
Requirements for models vary greatly around the world. And so a mother agent will also have important inside information such as, which agencies conduct business professionally and efficiently, and other important advice and information that can make the difference in your success as a model.
Being a mother agency isn't exclusive to agencies from smaller markets; big agencies can be mother agencies too. For example, if you live in a small market but you were scouted by a big agency they will become your mother agent as well. If the New York agency decides to send you to another market they will entitled to earn a commission from the other agency as well.
